How to Look After Your Car During Lockdown

As some of us haven’t used our cars for weeks and others have only made occasional short trips, we have put together some tips to help keep your car healthy:

Car Battery

If you don’t drive very often you should consider using a ‘trickle’ charger or battery conditioner.   This is the best way keep your battery healthy for long periods with little or no use. It will also keep immobilisers and other energy-sapping components from draining your battery completely.  If you don’t have access to either, drive the car for 10 – 15 minutes each week - if you are able to do so.  This should be enough to top up the battery.

Tyres

It’s essential that you check both the condition and the pressure of your tyres before any journey. Look out for any cracking in the sidewalls of all your tyres – any visible damage might mean you need to change your tyre.

Check that you have sufficient tyre tread depth (the legal minimum is 1.6mm).

Check the pressure in each of your tyres before you drive. They may have gone down if your car hasn’t been used. If they’ve gone down you’ll need to inflate to them to the recommended levels as outlined in your vehicle handbook, You can use your own tyre pump or use those available at petrol and service stations.

Lights, Oil, Washer Fluid and Coolant

It’s a good idea to check the levels of oil, coolant and washer fluid before you use your car for the first time after it has been sitting idle for a while. If the levels have dropped you will need to top up.  Check all the lights are working before you venture driving out in the dark.
