Coronavirus and your Car

We all know how to wash our hands properly, unfortunately, some forget that their car can also transmit the virus as it can stay on surfaces for several days.

A recent study found that the coronavirus can be found on surfaces like plastic and metal for up to 72 hours. As cars have many surfaces like that, the car can actually help the virus to spread.

Therefore, it is very important to clean the surfaces that your hands are in contact with while you are driving or sitting in your car, especially if a person has been in your car that is infected with the coronavirus or that you suspect to be infected. It is also advisable to clean your car properly if you have been in contact with a lot of people such as after visiting a supermarket.

Which parts do I need to clean?

Keys/fob

Door handles – inside and out

Door grab handles

Steering wheel / controls / stalks

Gear stick

Handbrake

Switches

Touchscreen

Seat belt buckle

Petrol cap

The car offers many surfaces for the virus and the more surfaces there are, the more the virus can spread.  You should therefore remove any items from your car that are unnecessary, such as blankets, pillows, clothes or rubbish.
