Our History
Mereworth Motors Ltd was established in 1976 and occupied a small workshop in Mereworth Road Tunbridge Wells.
What Else Was Happening in 1976?
Concorde was flying, Blondie was topping the charts, James Hunt was F1 Champion, Barry Sheene won the World 500cc Motorcycle Title, Summer saw a Heatwave and Water Shortages, Queen recorded A Day At The Races, Ford launched the Fiesta and Punks were everywhere
Bob bought the business in 1992 and in the years that followed, invested in equipment, training and staff. The business, along with the Customer base continued to grow.
Our Great Customer Service was first recognised in 1997 when we won the Good Housekeeping Magazine’s “Good Garage Awards”, the same year we celebrated the Company’s 21st Birthday.
In 1996 we also acquired Number 7 Mereworth Road to use as our Reception and Car Parking area. It wasn’t ideal - there were a pair of houses between our two buildings.
In 1999 we opened a scooter shop in St Johns Road. At that time it was a popular mode of transport for commuters to get to and from the station as well as 16 year olds whose only other option was a pushbike. We sold the bikes from the shop and serviced and repaired them at the workshop. Despite the shop being tiny, we were, for a few years running, one of the most successful Vespa / Piaggio / Gilera dealers in the UK. We closed the shop in 2011. We were unable to compete with cheap Chinese imports and the growing convenience of internet shopping.
We continued to operate the car repair business from Mereworth Road for another 25 years.
During this time we grew the business and actively sought alternative premises.
Fast forward to 2021. Our business survived the Covid Lockdowns, in fact, we were busier than ever.
We had finally found suitable alternative premises and in March 2021 we began to set up our new site in North Farm Road. Over the course of the next two months the new six bay workshop was cleaned, painted, re-wired and completely fitted out with new equipment.
We opened our shiny new Workshop on 1st May 2021.
Our excellent Customer Service was recognised again this year when we won the British Independent Garage Association Award for Customer Service.
We have a brilliant team who work incredibly hard to deliver a First Class Service.
Simon and Jason both started with us as apprentices. They have over 35 years experience between them and together successfully manage the day to day running of the business.
Rachael, who works alongside Simon, is our Customer Service Advisor who will greet you if you visit or call us. Alongside her is Andy, our driver, who will collect and return your car as part of our free collection & delivery service.
Dan & Josh are vehicle technicians who form the core of the workshop team with Jason. We are also currently investing in a new apprentice technician.
We now have a fleet of 11 collection and delivery vehicles and 2 courtesy cars.
