Air Conditioning Recharge and Repair

Air Conditioning Recharge and Repair

Car air conditioning (AC) systems can lose refrigerant over time, which reduces their efficiency and cooling capability. We have the equipment and expertise to accurately diagnose and repair leaks on all modern air conditioning systems.

Air Conditioning Recharge

  1. What is an AC Recharge?

    • An AC recharge involves adding refrigerant to the car's air conditioning system. This is necessary when the refrigerant level is low, which can occur due to leaks or normal wear and tear.

  2. Signs You Need a Recharge:

    • Insufficient cooling during summer months.

    • Hissing or bubbling sounds coming from the AC system.

    • Inefficient de-misting during the wet winter months

  3. The Recharge Process:

    • Remove all existing gas from the system and carry out a basic vacuum leak test (which must be passed).

    • Charge the system with the correct amount of gas to allow it to work properly.

    • If the leak test fails, or insufficient gas is recovered, perform a Pressure Test using a combination of Oxygen Free Nitrogen and Hydrogen at a high pressure to charge the system whilst a gauge is monitored. A drop in pressure on the gauge indicates a leak which is then detected with the use of a leak detection wand.

    • Test the System: Once recharged, the system should be tested to ensure it operates properly and cools effectively.

Leak Detection

  1. Why Detect Leaks?

    • Refrigerant leaks are common and can lead to a non-functional AC system. Detecting and repairing leaks is crucial for efficient operation.

  2. Methods for Leak Detection:

    • Visual Inspection: We look for oily spots around the AC components, which may indicate leaks.

    • Electronic Leak Detectors: These devices sense refrigerant leaks in the air, providing a more accurate detection method.

    • Dye Method: A fluorescent dye is added to the refrigerant. When the system runs, any leaks will allow the dye to escape, making it visible under ultraviolet light.

    • Pressure Test: A pressure test may be conducted to determine if the system holds the correct pressure, indicating no leaks are present.

  3. Repairing Leaks:

    • Once leaks are detected, they must be repaired, which may involve replacing seals, hoses, or other components of the AC system.

Regular maintenance and timely intervention can help keep your car’s air conditioning system running efficiently.

Is your Vehicle’s Air Conditioning Winter Ready?

Having fully functioning air conditioning in your car during winter is important, mainly for reasons related to safety, comfort, and vehicle maintenance:

Defrosting and Demisting:

In winter, the inside of your car windows can fog up or even frost over due to the temperature difference between the inside and outside. Air conditioning helps clear this condensation quickly by removing moisture from the air, ensuring better visibility and safer driving.

Improved Visibility:

Since cold weather makes fogging more likely, running the AC helps keep the windshield and windows clear, giving you a much better view of the road.

Dehumidifying the Air:

Air conditioning systems dehumidify the air, reducing the build up of moisture inside the car. This helps prevent condensation from forming on the windows, keeping the interior dry and preventing mould or mildew from forming on seats, carpets, and other materials.

Preventing AC Component Damage:

Using the air conditioning regularly, even in winter, helps keep it in good working order. The system's compressor, seals, and other components benefit from regular use, as it prevents parts from drying out or corroding, extending the system's overall lifespan.

Interior Comfort:

Even though it’s cold, a car’s interior can become stuffy, especially when there are several passengers. Using the AC in combination with the heater can create a comfortable temperature and ensure the air stays fresh, reducing the likelihood of drowsiness.

Maintaining a fully functional air conditioning system throughout the winter, then, helps with safety, comfort, and extending the life of the system, ensuring it's in good shape when the warmer months come around.
