Is your car safe to drive? Has it been parked up unused for weeks or has it been a while since you last got it checked? Discover the tell-tale signs that mean you need to take your car for a service.
WARNING LIGHTS
A warning light on your dashboard is a clear sign that something’s not right. Lots of the warning signs are easy to understand – an oil can symbol indicates low oil pressure, for example – but if you’re not sure what it means, have a look at your car manual.
STRANGE NOISES
What’s that sound you keep hearing when you drive? Squeaks, whistles, rattles and knocking noises are all telling you there’s something happening in your car that needs checking out. The exact source of the noise will need to be investigated.
FREQUENT STALLING
If you find yourself stalling at the lights for the umpteenth time, it could be a problem with the car and not with your driving. Frequent stalling could be a symptom of engine or clutch problems.
SMOKE OR STEAM
Clouds of smoke coming from your car are a sure sign of trouble. If there’s smoke or steam coming from under the bonnet, your engine is overheating, which could indicate a problem with a coolant leak. Black smoke coming from your exhaust could be down to an oil leak, caused by a fault with the pistons, oil seals or other parts.
